I have a confession. Mother’s day is my favorite day of the year. Better than a birthday. Better than Christmas. Better than any other day. Because this is the one day I feel that I can be selfish without feeling guilty.
I make a rule that I don’t have to cook on this day, or do laundry, or grocery shop. I get to eat out, take a nap and pretty much do what I want.
How about you? If you have a newborn, then no, you won’t be able to spend the whole day like I just suggested! Or, if you have a critically ill or disabled child you probably won’t either. I have a special paragraph just for you below.
But, you could begin to ask for some special treatment: maybe a nap while your husband gives the baby a bottle? Or maybe you could go shopping or work in the garden without any children interrupting. Perhaps ask your husband or a family member could do the driving for the children that day.
I know how hard taking time for yourself is when so many people are counting on you. Hopefully, these tips will help!

- 1. Be sure and communicate what you want to do on Mother’s Day. There are many husbands and children who might not even remember that it is this Sunday! They also won’t know what you want unless you tell them.
2. If you are living in the same city as your mother and / or mother-in-law, then start now preparing how you will honor them. Call and ask them if there is something that they want to do. Yes, it is hard to share your one-and-only-day-to-be-Queen-for-the-day, but our mothers deserve our love and honor too.
3. Help your little ones with ideas of simple things you might like: a hand-made card, a flower from the garden, or having them read you a story. Young children love to do for others, they just need some guidance.
4. And help your husband know what he could do for you. Many times husbands don’t do anything just because they don’t know where to start. I have already asked for lunch out after church and no cooking for the day! I also like a card…with the words “I love you” on it. Of course, flowers always work too!

Being a mother is a gift from God. Perhaps you could go to the Lord early on Mother’s day with a prayer of thanksgiving and thankfulness for the blessings He has given you!
“Behold, children are a gift of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.” Psalm 127:3-4

For those mothers who are now single moms or moms with children with disabilities, my heart goes out to you on this Mother’s Day.
Each day must be so difficult, those of you trying to be the father and the mother for your children. Or for those of you taking care of critically ill or severely disabled children. It must be so difficult to cope each day.
I know of a young woman who had twins who, upon birth, were found to have some brain damage. Then, the stronger of the two was given the wrong medicine and died. Now, each day, this precious new mom is trying to do all she can to help him overcome his disabilities.
What can we say to a mom going through these type of trials? All I know if to refer back to God’s Word. He knows everything and He knows exactly what you need:
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“A father of the fatherless and judge for the widows, is God in His holy habitation. God makes a home for the lonely.” Psalm 68:5-6
“But the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and song. And He has become my salvation.” Psalm 118:13-14

Please take care of your health. If we don’t take care of ourselves we won’t be any good to our families.
Just as the airline staff tells us to put the oxygen mask on ourselves first before we place it on our children, so we need to remember to balance all we have to do with time for our health.
God bless you this Mother’s Day!

NOTE: This blog has now gone one full year! Hearing from you by email or by your comments has been such a blessing and has kept me going. I pray that we can continue on helping one another as we walk down the pathway to being more organized in every area of our life.

Great article. How do you honor mothers that have disowned you or are not honorable?
This is a bittersweet holiday for some. Thank you for your words of kindness.
